The man behind the spectacular new Macallan distillery has been nominated for the IWSC’s Outstanding Achievement Award

Ken Grier, creative director of The Macallan, is the mastermind behind the ground-breaking new £140m Macallan Distillery. The distillery – described by The Telegraph as ‘the most ambitious project in Scotch whisky history’ – opened in June 2018.

Joining international spirits company Edrington in 1998, Grier’s first role was global controller for The Famous Grouse, Scotland’s biggest selling whisky. He went on to become marketing director of Highland Distillers, then director of Malt Whiskies, and finally creative director of The Macallan.

In his current role, Grier conceptualised, masterminded and managed the introduction of The Macallan Distillery and visitor attraction. In the first four weeks after the launch alone, the global campaign reached 64 million consumers around the world, giving a huge boost to the image, relevance and profile of Scotch whisky on an international level.

Outside of work, Grier’s passion for Scotch whisky continues; he is a board director of the Scotch Whisky Experience and a committee member of the Keepers of the Quaich, of which he is chairman elect from January 2019 for three years.

“It would be the pinnacle of my 20 year career to win this award,” Grier said.

“As a recognition from peers and the industry, it would be seen as the most iconic and important of all achievements, and a wonderful recognition of the time, dedication and hard work raising the profile of Scotch internationally.”

The winner of the Outstanding Achievement in Scotch Whisky Award will be announced at the IWSC Awards Banquet on 14 November. Like the IWSC Facebook page to tune in to the livestream on 14 November, and find out who will receive this prestigious award.
