After being shortlisted - already a remarkable achievement, as fewer than 3% of all IWSC entries are awarded a Gold medal - Paco & Lola have now received the IWSC 2025 White Wine Producer of the Year Trophy. For our judging panel, they emerged as "the obvious frontrunner" with a submission praised for "innovation, passion and detail."
The IWSC White Wine Producer Trophy celebrates excellence across white wine portfolios, recognising producers who combine quality with innovation and sustainability. Paco & Lola presented seven wines to our IWSC judges - and every single one earned at least a bronze medal, with their Paco & Lola Prime 2021 securing gold. As IWSC judge Mick O'Connell MW noted of their Gold-medal Albariño: "clearly good... quite a perfect wine, as in it's exactly where everything should be."
Paco & Lola President Carlos Carrión Álvarez and his team have reimagined Albariño production. Their approach begins with sustainable vineyard management and precision viticulture, but extends into groundbreaking research projects. The completed GreenSoilVin project reduced synthetic fertiliser use through innovative cover crops, whilst current initiatives like UBAVIDA explore producing lower-alcohol wines through agronomic techniques.
Innovation isn't confined to the cellar. Their Son & Sal concert series won Best Wine Tourism Experience in Spain, whilst products like IWine (designed to be served over ice) and Albariño Nº0 demonstrate adaptation to evolving consumer preferences without losing their Galician heart.
For Paco & Lola, 2025 has been a year of milestones. Paco & Lola Prime was named Best White Wine in Spain by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. Add to this a Grand Gold at Bacchus, multiple Best of Show titles at Mundus Vini, and countless medals at home and abroad, and it is no surprise our IWSC judges praised their consistent quality across the entire range, from classic expressions to premium bottlings that now reach over 40 international markets.
As the cooperative celebrates its 20th anniversary, the team notes. “This accolade honours not just the wines, but the families and values that sustain them.”
Congratulations to Paco & Lola.
