2022 was the first year the IWSC curated specially selected panels of sparkling wine experts which were led by Master of Wine and champagne and sparkling wine expert, Essi Avellan. Over two days of judging in London as well as most recently, our judging in Prosecco Superiore Docg, our judges tasted just shy of 900 sparkling wine entrants.

Essi Avellan MW commented: “I think that it really helps that we have sparkling wine panels, people who are more focused and experienced in tasting sparkling wine because as we’re aware, it's a very different style of wine and we're looking really for the finesse in the wine. So, the more you have specialist panels with real experts tasting properly organised flights like you have here at the IWSC, the more consistent the results are.”

Entries were received from countries all over the world, including Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, India, Myanmar, Romania, Taiwan and Turkey, however this year’s gold medal winners were limited to entrants from England, Italy and France.

In total, 16 gold medals were awarded to sparkling wines this year, though consistent quality was highlighted with just over 200 silver medals and 450 bronze.

The potential from the emerging countries is there, adds Essi, “While there is currently no real stand out sparkling wines yet from these emerging countries, the potential is certainly developing, as highlighted by the silver and bronze medals awarded amongst the tasting flights.”
