IWSC judges Alistair Cooper MW, Simon Field MW, Pierre Mansour and Matteo Montone MS tasted their way through 75 wines from the Spanish region of Castilla y León in order to recommend this selection of top-rated wines.
As the largest of Spain’s 17 autonomous regions, there’s a depth and breadth to the wines of Castilla y León well worth examining in further detail. As such, we assembled a panel of IWSC experts to taste their way through 75 wines from across the region – including full-bodied and powerfully oaked reds from the Ribera del Duero, aromatic and elegant wines from the hills of Bierzo and harmonic bottlings from Toro.
We applied the usual rigorous IWSC tasting rules to the process – with all wines tasted blind and scored according to our strict parameters – in order to determine the best Castilla y León has to offer. Judges on the day were Masters of Wine Simon Field and Alistair Cooper, as well as Master Sommelier Matteo Montone and buyer for The Wine Society, Pierre Mansour.
Overall, this was a promising tasting, demonstrating that the region has to offer very fine red wines, in particular, all awaiting wider international recognition.
