Popular Australian vineyard crowned ‘best winemaker in the world’ McGuigan Wines, a well-known brand among the UK’s 28 million wine drinkers, has beaten competition from the world’s finest vineyards to be crowned ‘International Winemaker of the Year’.

In addition to the prestigious title, awarded by the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC), the family-run Australian producer scooped 35 medals for its wine.

The impressive haul also included the coveted IWSC trophy for Semillon for its 2006 McGuigan bin 9000 Semillon.

IWSC’s marketing manager, David Kelly, said: “Working in the vines is the lifeblood and the passion of the McGuigan family. From the early days successive generations have been at the forefront of the Australian wine industry. Neil McGuigan has spent considerable time over recent years expounding the virtues of the Semillon grape, it is therefore fitting that they have won this award.”

The award was sponsored by VDP Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter, an association of 200 of Germany’s finest wine estates and one of the oldest national associations of wine growers in the world.

The shortlist for the International Winemaker of the Year consisted of the winners of the national wine producer trophies including Mission Hill Family Estate, Viña Cono Sur, Spier Wines and the UK winner Ridgeview Wine Estate.

The awards were announced at the IWSC’s annual banquet at London’s Guildhall on Wednesday 16 November. To see the photo gallery from this event please click here
