G. Garvin Brown IV, Chairman of the Board of Brown-Forman, last week <Jan 9th > assumed the presidency of the prestigious International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC).
He took over the role from outgoing president Mauricio González-Gordon, head of leading Spanish wine producer, Gonzalez Byass, at a ceremony at the Spanish company’s cellars in Jerez.
Mr Brown followed the tradition of other celebrated guests, including kings and queens of Spain and members of the British royal family, by signing one of their famous sherry barrels.
Founded in 1870 by George Garvin Brown in Louisville, Kentucky, Brown-Forman is one of the world’s top 10 spirits companies whose brands include Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, Southern Comfort, Finlandia Vodka and Herradura Tequila. G. Garvin Brown IV is a member of the fifth generation of the Brown Family.
He joins a prestigious group of IWSC presidents including last year’s appointment, Mauricio González-Gordon; previous presidents have included Prince Robert of Luxembourg, Gina Gallo and Wolf Blass.
In accepting the presidency Mr Brown said: “The IWSC’s focus on quality – its recognition and celebration of quality brands – is the perfect antidote for so much that is gripping today’s consumer.”
Allen Gibbons, Group CEO of the IWSC Group, said: “The IWSC has always been honoured by the calibre of the men and women who take on the mantle of president of the competition and this week’s handover represented the passing of that honour between two of the great families of our industry.”
