Following two successful years of judging in Austria, the IWSC is delighted to announce that we will be returning to the country for our third Global Judging event. This time, we will be visiting the region of Styria/Steiermark.

Styria/Steiermark is Austria’s most hilly wine-growing region. The incredible beauty of the lush, green landscape makes it one of the most delightful viticultural regions in the world – and the same holds true for its wines. Steiermark wines are known for being aromatic, fresh, fragrant and juicy with a typical display of spicyness and minerality. Shaped by steep slopes, meticulous craftsmanship in family-run wineries, and the unique Illyrian climate, these wines are full of character – with Sauvignon Blanc as the flagship variety.

The IWSC 2025 Wine Judging in Austria, in partnership with the Austrian Wine, will take place on 28 – 31 May 2025. We will be bringing to Styria/Steiermark a stellar team of industry experts, including Master of Wine & Judging Committee member Dirceu Vianna Junior who will oversee the tasting. More international judges representing both on-trade and off-trade sectors will be announced soon.

The 2024 Austrian Judging saw over 350 entries and more than 340 medals medals awarded. The IWSC judges were deeply impressed with the quality of entries, stating that Austrian wines showed "consistent excellence and strong varietal typicity." With the IWSC often compared to the Olympics of the wine world, “it is very rare in this (demanding) competition that almost all wines come away with a medal, which are all sought-after whether they are bronze, silver or gold," said our experts.

We are looking forward to delving once more into Austria’s dynamic and vibrant wine scene this year.
