Following our 2025 Global Judging event in Austria, Weingut Forstreiter has been awarded the Austrian Global Judging Producer Trophy for its outstanding wines. Based in Kremstal, Forstreiter achieved two Gold and two Silver medals with an impressive average score of 94 points.
Sweet grüner veltliners steal the show
Among a strong line-up of sweet wines, two Grüner Veltliners stood out.
Judge Philipp Reinstaller described the award-winning sweet wines as: “An absolute standout. The Grüner Veltliner Strohwein 2021 (Gold 98 Points) and Grüner Veltliner Trockenbeerenauslese 2021 (Gold 97 Points) are world-class examples, on par with the best sweet wines in the world.”
Judge Colin Thorne praised the Strohwein’s “epic concentration”, calling it: “A monument of intent, like a Google Earth zoom-in.” He described the Trockenbeerenauslese 2021 as having: “Insane levels of focus, intensity and purity,” highlighting its clear varietal character.
Spotlight on ried grüner veltliners
In Austria, Ried refers to single-vineyard wines, and Forstreiter impressed with two Silver medals for its Ried Grüner Veltliners.
Ried Kremser Kogl 2024 (Silver 90 Points): This Reid is known for its elegant, fruit-forward style grown on loess soils and Forstreiter did not disappoint our judges. David Kermode praised its: “Inviting pithy nose, white grapefruit, white pepper, herbal notes, smooth, rounded, lovely fruit intensity, balanced but viscous, fresh, with some good length.”
Ried Schiefer 2023 (Silver 91 Points): Is less well known than Kremser Kogl, but has a growing reputation. The name comes from slate and weathered rock soils that contribute the wines mineral characteristics. Judge Emma Penman noted this wines: “Salinity, fresh thyme, green pepper, yellow peach, a spicy finish and good length.”
