Following our 2025 Global Judging event in Turkey,
Akberg Şrince Şarapçilik has been awarded the Turkish Global Judging Producer Trophy for its exceptional wines. The Şirince-based producer impressed our judges with a trio of medals, two Golds and one Bronze. and a commitment to championing indigenous grape varieties and Turkish winemaking heritage.
Spotlight on Turkish terroir and native varieties
Akberg Şrince Şarapçilik’s success comes from its bold expressions of local grapes, most notably Papazkarası and Öküzgözü, captured through thoughtful winemaking and regional character.
Lethe Papazkarası 2024 (Gold):
This distinctive red was a clear standout, earning praise for its delicate aromatics and layered savoury profile.
David Kermode noted: “Delicate savoury nose, morello cherry, blackcurrant, peppery and dry with a balance of natural sweet fruit and some meaty savoury notes… chewy with some intriguing complexity.” While Isa Bal MS highlighted its “rich ripeness with carob, dry figs, and bay leaf,” praising how the volatile acidity complemented the style.
Cat Lomax added: “Ripe, rounded sweet cherry fruit on the front palate… a herbal edge with grippy tannin and a chewy finish.”
Büyükbağ Öküzgözü 2024 (Gold):
Bright, vibrant, and fruit-forward, this wine shone with its youthful energy. Judges described juicy layers of raspberry, cranberry, and mulberry, supported by fresh acidity and moderate alcohol. Wine Judging Committee member Sarah Abbott MW called it: “Clean and exuberant, with juicy density and lovely mulberry fruit… very tight and youthful on the palate. Promising.”
These wines demonstrate Akberg Şrince Şarapçilik’s ability to deliver structure and elegance while exploring the diverse expression of Turkish varietals.
A rising name in Turkish wine
Akberg Şrince Şarapçilik is based in Şirince, a historic winemaking village in western Turkey known for its scenic vineyards and artisanal wine culture. The producer’s approach blends modern techniques with a deep respect for native grapes, placing Turkish wine in the spotlight on the global stage.
As our judges noted, Akberg Şrince Şarapçilik’s award-winning wines capture a clear sense of place, and reflect a growing international interest in the diversity and quality of Turkish wine.
