As the IWSC continues its quest to propel a new generation of communicators, we are delighted to announce the winner of our Emerging Talent in Spirits Communication trophy.

2023 marks the second year the title will be awarded last week we shared our all-female shortlist highlighting the exciting future for this category.

The winner of the IWSC’s Emerging Talent in Spirits Communication Trophy, sponsored by Whyte & Mackay is Kate Malczewski.

Our judges agreed that Kate’s application stood out from the crowd. Together with her new role as editor for Barchick and her ongoing freelance work her output is informative, sharp and of the highest quality.

Her experience writing across several trade publications, including Imbibe and The Spirits Business plus her consumer facing role at Barchick showcases her amazing agility at adapting her communication style between consumer and trade. An impressive communicator and someone who doesn’t take herself too seriously, Kate is a worthy winner and a spirits communicator with a bright future.

With her prize of a £2.5k educational travel bursary from the IWSC, Kate intends to visit shochu makers and saké breweries in Japan. Kate has already written about them for multiple publications with both trade and consumer angles and would like to deepen her knowledge with first hand experience of production, sharing her learnings through informative features for magazines and websites, as well as through her social media channels.

In addition to the bursary, Kate will be invited by the award sponsor Whyte & Mackay to join the 60th anniversary celebrations for of the Jura distillery later this year.
