Celebrate Burns’ Night with these awarding-winning single malts

Toast Alloway’s most famous son this January 25th with these award-winning single malts from the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) ranging from £5,000 to £42. 

 

The Singleton of Glen Ord Single Malt Scotch Whisky 15 Year Old (Diageo Brands BV) £54, scooped the trophy for the best single malt 18 years and under.

 

While Glenmorangie’s Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky 25 Year Old (Glenmorangie Distillery) £194, won the trophy in the over 18-year category. 

 

The Balvenie Tun 1401 Single Malt Scotch Whisky (William Grant) £225, scooped the trophy for Single Malt Scotch Whisky with no age specified.

 

The following whiskies all won a ‘Gold Outstanding’ accolade at the competition:

•Dalmore Constellation Collection Vintage 1979 Highland Single Malt Whisky (Whyte & Mackay) £5,000

•The Dalmore Aurora Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky 45 Year Old (Whyte & Mackay) £2,800

•Glen Grant Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky 16 Year Old (Glen Grant) £47.99

•The Glenlivet Archive Single Malt Scotch Whisky 21 Year Old (Chivas Brothers) £98

•Lagavulin Distillers Edition Double Matured Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky 1994 (Diageo Brands BV) £69.95

The International Wine and Spirit Competition, founded in 1969, is the premier competition of its kind in the world. Its aim is to promote the quality and excellence of the world's best wines, spirits and liqueurs.

 

The competition enjoys an unrivalled reputation for the rigor and validity of its judging process, being the only of its type to conduct a fully blind tasting where judges see only numbered glasses, followed by extensive chemical analysis. 

 

Judging is conducted under EU-accredited processes with panels selected from more than 300 fully-qualified experienced industry judges representing the full breadth of the trade.

 

Judging takes places over a six-month period enabling the IWSC to judge current vintages making the results uniquely valid and indicative of the marketplace.

 

All entries are blind tasted in groups divided by variety, region and vintage as necessary. Awards are made on a points system and sponsored Trophies are presented in selected categories.

 

The IWSC is supported by some of the most influential men and women in the trade.
