2022 Wine Judging - deliberations from our judges #14

Wrapping up our final day of judging, Sarah Abbott MW was overseeing the wines from emerging regions and smaller wine producing regions. She shares her thoughts on the last day of tasting:

“I was delighted to see a good performance today from the wines of Georgia. Lovely reds, Saperavi was a real star. And their amber wines, some excellent amber wines which were very well judged and really appreciated by the panels. It's good to see that style being understood, with good technical proficiency. Very clean. I was happy to see the quality and the sophistication of Georgian wines really coming through.

“We have some really nice reds from Turkey and some again, some of the most popular with the ones from the more refreshing and lively grape varieties. So Kalecik Karasi showed really well today.

“Another star actually was Japanese Chardonnay for us today. Some lovely bright, fresh wines and a couple of really serious wines. Slightly closer to home, we've had some nice wines from Greece, from the islands in particular.

“And other regions we tasted today which are progressing well include Romania, we tasted a very credible wine from Poland. Lebanon showed well and it was good to see Moldovan wines actually coming through - and again, a lighter touch on oak good fruit expression, nice wines from both indigenous and slightly more international varieties.”
