We’re delighted to award Sakagura Ohtemon Co., Ltd. the IWSC 2024 Shochu Producer Trophy.

Sakagura Ohtemon has been a cornerstone of the shochu industry since its establishment in 1895. With a rich history of resilience, Ohtemon has weathered numerous challenges, including wartime disruptions and industry fluctuations. Following a significant turnaround in 2022, when the company was acquired by Mr. Kitaya of SHINWA Foods Chemical, Ohtemon has been revitalised, setting its sights on international expansion. The company’s mission is not only to craft exceptional shochu but also to elevate the global perception of this unique Japanese spirit. Ohtemon’s commitment to quality and innovation is evident in its diverse product range, including the celebrated "Madako Imo" and the award-winning "Aku no Kurobuka-AQ." The latter clinched the IWSC 2023 Shochu Trophy, solidifying Ohtemon’s standing as a leader in the industry.

Ohtemon’s dedication to sustainability and responsible production is particularly noteworthy, said our judges. With initiatives aimed at reducing plastic usage and enhancing recycling practices, the company aligns its operations with the Sustainable Development Goals. This approach not only demonstrates their environmental responsibility but also reflects a deeper commitment to cultural preservation through the medium of shochu. The company has made significant strides in exporting its products, achieving a remarkable 250% increase in international sales since 2023. This success is bolstered by active participation in global wine and spirits expos, such as Vinexpo and ProWein, where Ohtemon showcases its exceptional offerings.

Ohtemon has been awarded the Soshu Producer Trophy at the IWSC 2024 thanks to its unparalleled achievements and dedication to quality. Our panel of judges noted: “Sakagura Ohtemon displayed a commitment to quality, but also to brand building, and serving as ambassadors of Soshu internationally.” This accolade not only honours the company’s meticulous production methods but also its innovative marketing strategies that have effectively connected shochu with a global audience.

Sakagura Ohtemon’s blend of historical integrity, sustainable practices, and forward-thinking initiatives positions it as a trailblazer in the shochu market. The IWSC’s recognition of its efforts serves as a testament to its ongoing mission of fostering an appreciation for shochu worldwide, ensuring that this cherished Japanese spirit continues to flourish on the global stage.

Congratulations to Sakagura Ohtemon Co., Ltd.
