Celebrating England’s home-grown talent

With the UK looking forward to an extra day’s holiday in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II what better excuse to highlight home grown medal winners from our 2022 wine awards.

In the 70 years since The Queen ascended to the throne back in 1952, the English wine industry has changed irrevocably. The 1950’s saw the revival of the English wine industry, with the planting of the country’s first commercial vineyard at Hambledon, Hampshire in 1951, marking the turning point.*

Though winemaking in England is nothing new - wine has been produced here since the time of the Roman occupation - today there are over 400 active vineyards across the country. And even Her Majesty is getting in on the act, releasing her very own Platinum Jubilee Release 2022 English Sparkling Wine.

In celebration of the continued advances of England’s home-grown winemaking talent, this year the IWSC awarded medals to 36 English winerys, from across 10 counties.

105 English wines were awarded a medal, 24 of these were still wines and the rest sparkling wines. Only three of the IWSC’s coveted gold medals were awarded to wines from Gusbourne ,   Lyme Bay Winery and  Tinwood Estate.

Overall the 2022 medal haul for English wines, like the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is definitely something to celebrate.
