IWSC Releases Wine Results for Australia and New Zealand

 

Today (9th October 2014), the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) announces its wine results for Australia and New Zealand. This year saw Australia successfully awarded three trophies; The Warren Winiarski Trophy for Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded to Gatt wines for its Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2009, a perfectly balanced wine of fruit, oak and acidity leaving a long and elegant finish.

 

Producer Australian Vintage Ltd secured its place as the 2014 Semillon Wine trophy winners with the McGuigan Bin 9000 Semillon 2006 and the Trophy for Worldwide Fortified Wine was awarded to Penfolds Grandfather Rare Tawny 20 YO.

 

A strong performance from Australia also saw the country win 19 Gold Outstanding medals, with three winning wines by producer Wolf Blass. The Wolf Blass Grey Label Shiraz 2012 was one of the winners with the judges commenting ‘acidity is good, balance is first class.’

 

Producers in New Zealand also won three Trophies including producer Peren Farms winning two for its Two Sisters Vineyard SV Riesling 2009, The London Wine Fair Trophy for Single Vineyard White and also The Jancis Trophy for Riesling. The judges said this wine had ‘great definition’ and ‘great concentration of flavours, apple and gooseberries’.

 

New Zealand won 392 medals in total including nine Gold medals. Two of these were awarded to the Marisco Vineyards for The Ned Noble Sauvignon Blanc 2013 and A Sticky End 2011, the latter a Botrytis wine with an old gold colour and voluptuous nose of passion fruit and candied orange peel, with glimpses of marmalade and spices. 

 

Yealands Wine Estate in New Zealand did extremely well again this year with 37 medals awarded including one Gold and three Silver Outstanding. The Reserve Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir 2013 received the Gold medal and judges said that the wine is, ‘elegant, subtle and perfectly balanced with slight firmness on finish.’
