THE Irish economy may be the bane of our EU cousins but when it comes to making whiskey we here in Louth are the champions of Europe.

Cooley Distillery, for the third year running, has claimed the European Distiller of the Year title at the International Wine & Spirits Competitions – the international drinks industry's equivalent of the Olympics.

Cooley, Ireland's only independent distillery fought off the challenges of the top Scottish, French, German, Italian and Swedish distilleries to retain its crown as the top distillery in Europe.

Jack Teeling, Managing Director Cooley Distillery, said, "To be the best in Europe three years in a row is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved in Cooley Distillery and is an Irish success story we can all be proud of in these challenging times. Our success is based on innovation, a range of world class whiskeys and lot of hard work."

Earlier this year, Cooley claimed IWSC 10 gold medals to take its tally to over 100 international gold medals.

To date Cooley has won the European Distiller of the Year title three times (2008, 2009, 2010), been named the 2008 IWSC World Distiller of the Year and collected the prestigious Brown Forman Trophy for Worldwide Whiskey of the Year.
