Bulmer started his career in the on-trade before working for small independent wine merchants and eventually The Wine Society, where he joined the buying team in 2015. His experience has focussed on wines from Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Portugal, Eastern Europe and England, however he has many years of experience judging wines from all over the world.

He has regularly featured in the "100 Most Influential People in Drinks" list and is credited with playing a key role in promoting Austrian fine wines in the UK Market, being the first Buyer in the world to apply the en primeur model to the country's top Erste Lage wines.
