There were some surprising results from the International Wine and Spirit Competition 2011 Northern Hemisphere Judging with Greece scooping Gold (Best in Class) for its Chardonnay from Producer Ktima Pavlidis. The country also took home 1 Gold, 9 Silver (Best in Class), 20 Silver and 31 Bronze awards.
Another surprise winner was the Channel island of Jersey. Producer La Mare Wine Estate, which won a Bronze for its Domaine De La Mare 2008, Reichensteiner/Seyval Blanc. English medal winning wines were up from 23 last year to 29 this year with sparkling still dominating. The only Gold went to Ridgeview Wine Estate for its Grosvenor Blanc de Blancs 2007. A Silver (Best in Class) was awarded to Chapel Down Pinot Reserve 2004. England saw a further 6 Silver medals and 21 Bronze.
The spread of US regions has also been notable, with the IWSC covering many more than just California and New York. The country picked up 216 Medals in total - 7 Gold medals, 107 Silvers and 102 Bronze medals.
Canada yet again picked up a number of awards. It took home 193 medals - 12 Gold, 97 Silvers, and 84 Bronze, following on from 4 Trophy wins awarded at the prestigious IWSC Banquet last year. Russia, scooped a Silver medal for its upmarket sparkling wine from Tsimlyanskie Vineyard. Russian entries to the competition more than doubled this year and with 7 medals in total, it is beginning to confirm its presence on the international stage.
David Kelly, IWSC Marketing Manager, comments: "The growth in northern hemisphere entries has been impressive across the board. And it is good to see new wines equally benefit from the international promotional opportunities open to them.”
The big wins were concentrated in the traditional wine producing regions of the ‘old world’ with impressive results: France led with 707 medals in total. It won 29 Gold medals (13 Best in Class), 125 Silver (Best in Class), 218 Silver and 335 Bronze. The Champagne region alone had picked up 9 Gold (Best in Class) 10 Gold’s, 29 Silver (Best in Class), 89 Silver and 45 Bronze medals.
In second place came Italy with 627 medals in total - 7 Gold (Best in Class), 7 Gold, 97 Silver (Best in Class), 186 Silver and 330 Bronze. Spain came third with 477 medals – 4 Gold (Best in Class), 6 Gold, 57 Silver (Best in Class), 128 Silver and 275 Bronze.
Germany won a total of 142 medals - 5 Gold (Best in Class), 3 Gold, 23 Silver (Best in Class), 53 Silver and 58 Bronze. Israeli wines picked up a Gold, 2 Silver (Best in Class), 3 Silvers and 13 Bronze with Lebanon scooping 2 Silver (Best in Class) and 4 Bronze. Japan hauled in 5 Silver (Best in Class), 2 Silvers and 32 Bronze and Austria 7 Silver and 15 Bronze.
