We’re delighted to award Redbreast, part of Irish Distillers’ portfolio, the IWSC 2022 Worldwide Whiskey Producer Trophy, sponsored by Labrenta.
With decades of heritage behind it, Redbreast is the largest selling single pot still Irish whiskey in the world. The first official reference to the Redbreast name was as far back as 1912, when “Redbreast J.J Liqueur Whiskey 12 Years Old” was advertised for sale. But the modern era for the whiskey truly began in December 1991 when, after a 10-year hiatus, it was relaunched by Irish Distillers.
An industry powerhouse, Irish Distillers brought with them investment, including a new programme of wood such as sherry and bourbon casks. Redbreast released its core range, such as the 12-year-old, alongside artisan projects such as different wood finishes.
From amongst the range entered into this year’s competition, it was Redbreast’s 27-year-old that really caught the judges’ eye. This is the oldest bottling in the range. It’s made from exclusively pot-still distilled spirit which is matured in bourbon, sherry and ruby Port casks.
The judges awarded the spirit 98 points, noting its expressive aromatics, including red fruits, mango, guava and Christmas cake baking spices. “It boasts a rich, beautiful texture within its luxurious palate,” the judges said. “A subtle fieriness punctuates the decadently long finish. Luxurious, and exceptionally made.”
Redbreast 21-year-old was also singled out for 98 points. “This is superbly elegant and masterfully approachable,” said the judges. “The underlying fruit aromatics of peach, apricot, pineapple and lychee are balanced by a smart woodiness. Completed by flavours of tarte tatin and floras, a pinch of baking spice leaves you wanting more.”
Congratulations to Redbreast and thank you to our award sponsor, Labrenta.
