After dropping out of college and working in a wine bar from the age of 18, Freddy fell into the wine industry when he became an apprentice for a North Yorkshire based wine merchant in 2011.
He then joined another independent wine merchant in Ripon, North Yorkshire, where he was involved in all aspects of the business from loading the van to hosting dinners and meeting with suppliers. In 2013 he moved to The Wine Society and took a fixed-term position answering the phone over Christmas. He then proceeded to work his way through the business and into the Buying department, when he was made “Trainee Buyer” in 2015. At which point he also concentrated on passing the WSET Diploma.
Freddy is now responsible for The Wine Society’s portfolio of wines from Austria, Greece, Hungary, Eastern Europe, Australia and New Zealand, as well as the range of beers and ciders.
Aside from Buying, Freddy also contributes a monthly column for OllySmith.com, he has judged in numerous wine competitions before and is determined to never forget that wine should first and foremost be about having fun.
