Alessandro “Alex” Basile ( WSET Level 2 / The Guild of Whiskey Sommelier ) , is General Manager of Black Rock, one of the world’s leading whisky destinations and a four-time winner of Best UK Specialist Bar. Raised in Southern Italy, he moved to London in 2014, where an entry-level role in a large independent venue sparked a deep commitment to hospitality and whisk(e)y culture. Joining Black Rock in 2019, Alessandro became instrumental in shaping its global reputation. He expanded the collection from 100 to more than 500 whiskies, curating rare single casks, independent bottlings, and benchmark releases from Scotland, the United States, Japan, and beyond. In 2020 he launched a weekly tasting programme that has since hosted hundreds of producers, offering guests access to exceptional liquids at approachable prices with the aim of democratising whisky, even at the luxury end. Balancing technical knowledge with a hospitality-first approach, Alessandro focuses on interaction, education, and storytelling. He has developed staff training programmes, led long-term brand collaborations, and represented Black Rock at major events including Cocktail in the City, contributing to the venue’s recognition among the World’s Best 500 Bars. An IWSC judge since 2024, Alessandro remains dedicated to nurturing new drinkers and connoisseurs alike, believing that the future of whisky lies in openness, diversity, and genuine human connection.
