The IWSC’s Chinese wine results have been announced today – the last of the results to be announced from this year’s competition.

The standout from the country is Ningxia Helanshan Manor Syrah Dry Red Wine 2013, the only Chinese wine to win a Gold Outstanding medal this year.Chinese.jpg

Judges praised the Syrah for its “juicy palate, crisp acidity and linen-textured tannins to support, full-bodied, nicely balanced with lengthy finish.”

The wine has gone on to win the Chinese Wine Trophy, which will be presented to Ningxia Helanshan Manor Wine Company at the IWSC Awards Banquet on 14 November.

The company was also shortlisted for Chinese Wine Producer of the Year, alongside Xinjiang Silk Road Manor Winery, whose Chateau Silkroad Ice Wine White 2017 was awarded Silver Outstanding in today’s results announcement.

Judges described the icewine as “very sweet with bracing acidity in balance, light-bodied but with excellent creamy texture across the palate, savoury finish. Very good wine.”

Every wine entered by Xinjiang Silk Road Manor Winery went on to win an award, in fact, including two Bronze medals for their Carmenère wines – a grape variety unusual in China and predominantly grown in Chile.

Beyond these two leading producers, the usual suspects of blended reds and Cabernet Sauvignon dominate, while the Marselan grape also received five medals this year, signifying where to look for new developments in Chinese wine.
