The IWSC announce 2015 Chile and Argentina results in conjunction with Mercado Andino Trade Tasting in London

Today (9th September) sees the announcement of the International Wine & Spirit Competition’s (IWSC) South American wine results for 2015 at the new Mercado Andino tasting in London. The IWSC team will be present at the event, hosting a table at stand 104, pouring award winning wines and distributing certificates to winning producers. The results have been released in conjunction with the opening of the Mercado Andino trade tasting, held at the famous Old Spitalfields market in London. The event takes visitors on a wine journey across the Andes, turning the main space at the iconic Spitalfields into an Andean market place with more than 140 different wineries presenting their ranges to UK and European press and trade buyers.   

This year Chile led the medal table with 356 awards closely followed by Argentina’s 243. From Mendoza to the Maipo valley, red wines dominated the South American results, with all Gold and Gold Outstanding medals from the region awarded in this category. Bodega Valentin Bianchi were awarded a coveted Gold Outstanding medal for their Particular Malbec 2011, which judges described as ‘sublime’. Carmelita Vineyard in the Uco Valley, established in 2007, won a Gold medal for their Cabernet Franc 2012 and a Silver Outstanding for their Malbec 2012. Anakena had a stand out performance, scooping a Gold medal for their Anakena Alwa Carmenere 2010.

There were also some outstanding performances from white wines, with Marks & Spencer’s Emiliana Viognier 2014 awarded a Silver Outstanding medal. Also claiming this accolade was Vina La Reserva de Caliboro SA for their Erasmo Late Harvest Torontel 2010, described by judges as being ‘perfectly balanced between rich sweetness & fresh citrus acidity’.  

IWSC general manager Ewan Lacey commented: ‘It is fantastic to see such a strong performance, from both Chile and Argentina. Our judges have been tasting these wines since July and we’ve been busy preparing the results in time for Mercado Andino to make the most of the opportunity to connect with our producers.’ 

International trophies including Malbec and Carménère will be presented in November at the Annual Awards Banquet held in London, along with the announcement of the coveted Chilean and Argentine Wine Producers of the Year.
