2012 has seen the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) receive its highest ever number of Northern Hemisphere wine entries.
The Competition has seen an increase in entries year on year, with 2012 seeing France scoop the most awards at the prestigious wine and spirit competition.
Old world countries dominated; France’s 827 medals were made up of four ‘Gold Outstanding’, 31 Gold medals, 54 ‘Silver Outstanding’, 326 Silver and 412 Bronze.
Italy were second with 621 medals in total – three ‘Gold Outstanding’, 16 Gold, 47 ‘Silver Outstanding’ 263 Silver and 291 Bronze.
Spain came third with 509 medals with seven Golds, 23 ‘Silver Outstanding’, 197 Silver and 282 Bronze.
Germany won a total of 71 medals. The country’s haul including one ‘Gold Outstanding’, one Gold two ‘Silver Outstanding’, 28 Silver and 39 Bronze.
Canada was once again recognised for the quality of their entries with 195 awards including three ‘Gold Outstanding’ medals for Inniskillin Riesling Icewine 2008, Magnotta Sparkling Ice Limited Edition VQA 2008 and Strewn Vidal Icewine 2008.
English scooped a total of 33 awards this year. Notably, Bolney Wine Estate in West Sussex, scooped a ‘Gold Outstanding’ for its sparkling Blanc De Blanc 2007.
Furleigh Estate in Dorset and Gusbourne Estate in Kent both scooped a ‘Silver Outstanding’ for their sparkling wines; respectively, a Classic Cuvee 2009 and a Blanc de Blanc 2007 and Mount Vineyard in Kent was awarded a Silver for its Sparking Rose 2009, while Hampshire vineyards Jenkyn Place and Danebury Vineyard won Bronze medals.
Russia, scooped a ‘Sliver Outstanding’ for its Special Collection Kuban Madeira Chateau Tamagne Reserve 1991.
David Kelly, IWSC Group Sales and Marketing Controller commented: "The growth in northern hemisphere entries has been impressive across the board. And it is good to see new wines equally benefit from the international promotional opportunities open to them. We now have a proactive marketing programme to make sure all of our medal winners have the tools they need to shout about their awards.”
The results were announced on Tuesday 22nd May, the morning of the London International Wine Fair.

The Competition is still open to Southern Hemisphere wine entries, enabling entrants to submit their latest vintages, with the entry deadlines closing on 29th June (South Africa), 3rd August (South America), 10th August (Australia) and 24th August (New Zealand).
