Lanchester Wines win IWSC 2023 Green Wine Initiative Trophy

At IWSC, not only we recognise excellence in the quality of wines, spirits and other drinks, we also value the hard work producers put into minimising their environmental impact and preserving their heritage vineyards. Today, at our 2023 Awards Celebration at the Roundhouse, London, we were delighted to announce the winners of our Sustainability Awards, including Green Wine Initiative and Old Vine Trophy.

Winner of IWSC 2023 Green Wine Initiative: Lanchester Wines

This year, the shortlist for our Green Wine Initiative included such highly regarded brands as Bolney Wine Estate, Bonterra Organic Estates, Fattoria La Vialla, Lanchester Wines, Lawsons Dry Hills and Ridgeview Wine Estate. Having carefully reviewed all applications, our judges have chosen Lanchester Wines as the winner of the IWSC 2023 Green Wine Initiative.

The judges were utterly impressed with the scale of sustainability work implemented by this year’s winner. One of the UK’s leading wine importers and wholesalers, Lanchester Wines have invested over £10 million in renewable heat and energy generation at their sites across England. Today their business is powered almost completely by renewable wind and solar energy. The judges appreciated the fact that this considerable investment was made from the company’s own ‘pocket’ and not through grants, which shows Lanchester Wines’ true commitment to sustainability. Their other initiatives include introducing an innovative heat pump technology using water from disused mines to heat the warehouses in Gateshead.

As wine importers, Lanchester have been actively advocating bulk wine to reduce the shipped volumes thus minimising the carbon footprint. “If you are talking about overall impact, Lanchester Wines has more wines in people’s kitchens than everyone altogether, so the impact of their work is huge,” said our judges.
