Last week our expert judges were tasked with retasting all gold-medal winning wines from the IWSC 2024 for the final endorsement – IWSC’s wine trophies. The panels were formed of on-trade and off-trade wine professionals ensuring a fair representation across the industry. The IWSC Judging Committee members - Alistair Cooper MW, Mick O’Connell MW, John Hoskins MW, Dirceu Vianna Junior MW and Alex Hunt MW were joined by our esteemed judges - Isa Bal MS, David Kermode, Victoria Mason MW, Rebecca Palmer and Melania Battiston.

With nearly 7,000 wines tasted throughout the 2024 awards, our judging experts awarded 24 outstanding entries with this year’s trophies. The 2024 trophy-winning wines include 4 sparkling, 12 still dry wines and 8 sweet/fortified wines.

Following their stellar medal performance at our 2024 judging, sweet & fortified wines scooped 8 wine trophies, 4 of which went to Sherries: Gonzalez Byass Tesco Finest Fino NV, Valdespino El Candado Pedro Ximénez NV, Emilio Lustau 30 YO Amontillado NV and Bodegas Fundador Harveys VORS Palo Cortado Medium Blend NV.

Two more trophies were awarded to Madeiras, both standout entries coming from D'Oliveiras: Boal 2006  and 15 YO Dry NV. Another sweet/fortified wine trophy went to a standout Rutherglen Muscat – Campbells Merchant Prince Rare Muscat NV.

Sparkling wines received 4 wine trophies, equally distributed between Champagne and English Sparkling. Trophy-winning Champagne entries include Henriot Brut 2014 and Co-op Les Pionniers Brut 2013. As for English sparkling, the coveted awards went to Wyfold Vineyard Rosé Brut 2018 and Gusbourne Boot Hill Vineyard Blanc De Blancs Brut 2018.

Looking at still dry wines, Australia stood out as one of the most decorated countries achieving four trophies. Margaret River was the highlight among Australian wine regions, with 2 trophies awarded to Margaret River entries - Coward & Black Vineyards The Black Prince Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 and Deep Woods Estate Reserve Chardonnay 2020.

South African wines received 3 coveted trophies, all 3 of them going to Western Cape: Perdeberg Wines Endura Single Vineyard Chenin Blanc  2022, Vilafonté Series M 2019 and Vilafonté Series C 2019 are the trophy-winning wines.

We were delighted to see a trophy awarded to a Georgian orange wine – Lopota Chateau Buera Mtsvane Qvevri Reserve 2020, as well as another one going to a Turkish red - Likya Winery Collection Pinot Meunier 2023, reflecting the growing quality of entries from these emerging wine countries.

Congratulations to all our Wine Trophy winners on their brilliant performance!
