Judges assembled at the Culinary Institute of America on Friday 25 March for a full induction in the Rudd Centre in preparation for tasting USA wine entries in the International Wine & Spirit Competition. Philip Goodband MW, chair of the IWSC Technical & Judging Committee, presented the criteria & marking system to the group of 28 as they tasted their way through a range of winners from the 2010 Competition to calibrate their palates.

The Competition judging took place in the Ventura classrooms, used during week days by students in the famous culinary school, an area which is perfectly suited as it replicates the IWSC tasting rooms in the UK.

Chair Judges included Debra Meiburg MW from Hong Kong; Warren Winiarski, well known in Napa; Wayne Donaldson and James King. Judges were divided into four panels and each group tasted their way through a range of wines from across the country awarding several gold medals.

Winners cannot be confirmed until the winning wines, which have since been shipped back to the UK, complete the chemical analysis. Following this they will be tasted by an international panel at the IWSC premises for the relevant trophies.

Dates to remember:

  • US winners will be released at the time of the London Wine Fair 17-19 May; these will be up on the website: www.iwsc.net on the first day of the fair.
