We’re delighted to name El Recuerdo Mezcal the winner of the IWSC 2022 Agave Producer Trophy, sponsored by Spirits Kiosk.
El Recuerdo is an innovative family producer, now in its fifth generation. It’s not just the exceptional quality of their Joven and Abocado Con Gusano Mezcal which makes this Oaxaca-based producer stand out. It’s also their commitment to social and environmental sustainability.
El Recuerdo’s traditional production techniques are spliced with their mission to work in low-impact ways. On their 27-acre estate, they grow Espadin agave from seed rather than opting for genetically identical clones. They also work with partner growers in Oaxaca and local universities to research a variety of different agave species. To make their Mezcal, El Recuerdo cook their agave on river rocks over fires; the wood they burn comes from sustainably managed local forests.
In addition to their work to increase biodiversity “from field to bottle”, El Recuerdo are also taking steps to lessen their environmental impact. “We have our own wastewater treatment facility; we collect rainwater, and we use solar panels for our heating needs,” the team tells us.
The producer also plays an important role in the local community. “Our Foundation El Agave y Nosotros focuses on benefiting and promoting local artists and artisans. The Don Antonio Rivera Venegas Foundation offers basic services such as medical care, help in natural disasters and training in agronomy.”
This is Mezcal made the right way – a delicious spirit produced with respect for the process, people and planet. “We know this is a new category for many,” the team say. “And we take a serious role in welcoming people to the fascinating world of Mezcal.”
Congratulations to El Recuerdo Mezcal and thank you to our award sponsor, Spirits Kiosk.
