GALA EVENING FOR THE 150 YEARS OF THE UNITY OF ITALY.

BERLUCCHI, SANTA MARGHERITA AND THE MASTER OF WINE INSTITUTE TAKE THE VINITALY INTERNATIONAL AWARDS

Event organised for the presentation of UNA, the official Bottle of the 150th anniversary of the Unity of Italy promoted by VeronaFiere. Anistatia Miller and Jared Brown announced as Communicators of the Year. The Vinitaly International Awards were made to the Master of Wines Institute in the international section and for Italy jointly to companies Guido Berlucchi and Santa Margherita.

Verona, 6 April 2011 – The first public presentation in Italy today for UNA, the Bottle for the 150 Years of the Unity of Italy, following consignment in New York last 27 March to the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano. The occasion is the gala evening for Vinitaly (7-11 April 2011 – www.vinitaly.com) organised by VeronaFiere at Palazzo della Gran Guardia and attended by the President of the Senate Agriculture Commission, Paolo Russo, the President of the Veneto Region, Luca Zaia, the Mayor of Verona, Flavio Tosi, the President of the Province, Giovanni Miozzi, and the top management of VeronaFiere: President Ettore Riello and CEO/Director General Giovanni Mantovani. The chef for the evening is Giancarlo Perbellini, with actress Monica Vallarini in the role of presenter.

The Bottle celebrating the 150th anniversary, after official consignment to President Napolitano, will become a gift for leading international dignitaries; the limited edition (3,400 special presentation boxes with two bottles each, one Vino Bianco d'Italia and one Vino Rosso d’Italia, for a total of 6,800 bottles in three Jeroboam, Magnum and traditional 0.75 litre formats) is not available on sale and embraces significant symbolic values. in short, it aims to be a tool for promotion highlighting the special features of Italian wine-growing and the typical cultural values of the country it represents all over the world.

The contents of the bottles, specifically designed by Aldo Cibic and Riccardo Facci and produced at no cost by Bormioli Rocco, involved forty native grapes (twenty white and twenty red) embodying the 20 Regions of Italy. These wines will be served on official occasions celebrating the foundation of the Italian State, even abroad. The creation of the blends involved Assoenologi, while the native grapes and relative wines were specifically chosen by 20 regional councillors for Agriculture. The initiative was warmly received by the President of the Republic who personally requested that it be expanded as far as possible through other approaches - within the scope of the 2011 edition of Vinitaly in Verona and abroad during the Vinitaly in the World tours to the main cities all over the world.

Traditionally, the Vinitaly Gala Evening is also the occasion for presenting the Vinitaly International Awards, made to Italian and international personalities/companies/institutions distinguished for their efforts on behalf of the world of wine.

Two winners this year for Italy: the Guido Berlucchi company, acknowledged as the cellar where the first classic method Franciacorta was made, and Santa Margherita, a wine cellar always in the avant-garde, to the extent of having invented Pinot Grigio 50 years ago, later becoming one of the most successful wines in the world. The International winner in the Master of Wines Institute.

The winners of the Communicator of the Year Award, set up in collaboration with the International Wine & Spirit Competition, will also be proclaimed: recognition this year for Anistatia Miller and Jared Brown, the inseparable pair of cocktail experts, directors of Mixellany Limited and publishers of Mixologist: the Journal of the American Cocktail.
