Viscount Thurso was previously MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, and was the first former Hereditary Peer to be elected to the House of Commons. He served as a member of the Liberal Democrat Shadow Cabinet for the second time as Shadow Secretary for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform until the General Election in May 2010.
Prior to entering full time politics, he had a successful career in the hotel business as General Manager of the Savoy’s Hotel Lancaster in Paris, Founder General Manager and Director of Cliveden, and latterly Chief Executive of Fitness and Leisure Holdings Limited, who owned Champneys. He is a Fellow and Past Patron of the Institute of Hospitality, President of the Tourism Society of the United Kingdom, Patron of the Academy of Food & Wine Service, Patron of the Institute of Management Services and Grand Master of the Keepers of The Quaich. He is also the Chair of Visit Scotland.
