Producer profile: Stellenrust
South African wine estate Stellenrust, winner of the IWSC Chenin Blanc Trophy for the fourth time this year, has produced some of the finest wines from the Stellenbosch region since the winery’s establishment in 1928.
Run by brothers Tertius and Kobus Boshoff – winemaker and viticulturist respectively – today Stellenrust is one of South Africa’s largest family-owned wineries.
The estate spans some 400 hectares (200ha planted), half of which stretches over the Golden Triangle, a subregion of Stellenbosch renowned for its outstanding red wines, with the other half sitting in the cool climate of the Bottelary Hills, where both red and white grapes benefit from late afternoon sea breezes coming up from Cape Town.
The winery produces more than 30 different wines, but it’s particularly well-known for its range of Chenin Blancs, which are produced from the Bottelary Hills plot.
Stellenrust Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc 2017 and 2018 were rated 95 and 96 points respectively by IWSC experts last year; the latter was praised for its crisp acidity and balanced use of oak, and was awarded the Chenin Blanc Trophy 2019 at the IWSC awards gala in November. This marks the fourth time Stellenrust has received the trophy since its establishment in 2006 – also taking it home in 2012, 2013 and 2017 – more times than any other producer.
